Medsan’s 40×40 cm hand-signed original giclée, titled Hokusai Samurai (北斎と侍のオマ), created in 2026 in France, in an original unique edition and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
With this square-format piece, Medsan masterfully reinterprets the world's most famous Japanese print, Katsushika Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Continuing his exploration of textures, the artist moves away from traditional flat color to a rendering that perfectly imitates the richness and thickness of oil paint (impasto technique), giving this icon of Asian art a visceral, post-impressionist dimension.
The theatrical composition pits the unleashed fury of the elements against human impassivity. In the foreground, a solitary samurai, seen from behind with his traditional topknot (chonmage), sits cross-legged on jagged rocks swept by foam. In meditation posture, he has laid next to him his two swords (daisho) and his straw hat (kasa). Opposite him rises the colossal wave, whose foam-claws threaten to engulf the frail boats (oshiokuri-bune) battling in the trough of the swell.
The visual impact of the work rests on the dramatic treatment of light and matter. The deep, roiling blues of the sea, textured with thick, dynamic brushstrokes, contrast intensely with a warm, pinkish-orange sky of a setting sun. This vibrant palette sublimates the storm’s violence while infusing it with deep poetry.
A spectacular and contemplative piece, endowed with a powerful narrative force, ideal for adding a touch of reinvented classicism, elegance, and character to a contemporary interior.

About the Atelier:
Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists united around a living, diverse contemporary creation. Installed as a true site of artistic production, the studio operates both in collective creation and in individual approaches, depending on projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. By his side, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo pursues a more instinctive search, blending abstract art, outsider art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, created, and followed within the studio, with a shared artistic standard and each artist’s own identity.
