Description from the seller
Max-Daniel — The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, 2026
Original unique work — digital print on canvas, oil glaze and highlights — 50 × 75 cm - glossy varnish
This work by Max-Daniel revisits the classic theme of the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, one of the major subjects of Christian iconography and the history of Western art. According to tradition, Sebastian was a Christian Roman soldier condemned under Emperor Diocletian: tied to a tree or a post, he was pierced by arrows, miraculously surviving before being finally killed. Since the Renaissance, this scene has become a major subject for artists, allowing the depiction of both suffering, the beauty of the body, faith and spiritual elevation. Saint Sebastian is also traditionally associated with protection against the plague, as well as with archers and soldiers.
In this composition, Max-Daniel adopts the codes of grand religious painting: the saint’s luminous body, attached to the tree, dominates the scene, while the armed figures surrounding him heighten the dramatic tension. The artist offers a contemporary and postmodern interpretation of the subject, blending ancient references, theatrical composition and current techniques.
Max-Daniel is a professional Parisian artist, PhD in Arts and Art Sciences from the Sorbonne University. His work explores major biblical, mythological and historical subjects through a hybrid practice: artificial intelligence, digital printing on canvas, manual interventions, oil glazes, retouching and highlights. He champions a postmodern approach, where traditional and contemporary techniques are used to serve a personal re-reading of the great visual narratives.
This work is a single original piece, “One of a kind,” signed and certified by the artist’s hand. The digital print on canvas is protected by two layers of acrylic varnish.
