Description from the seller
Beautiful antique Burmese Karen betel box, handmade from woven bamboo and finished with a unique dark ochre-colored lacquer.
9 x 9 cm
This box, originating from the Karen people who live along the border between Thailand and Burma, stands out for its use of natural earth pigments, in contrast to the predominantly red lacquer of other Burmese betel boxes. The decoration consists of split bamboo strips left in their natural color, which provides a beautiful contrast. Under the lid there are two original inner trays. Dating from the late 19th century, this betel box is generally in good condition, with wear and signs of use that suit its age and the authentic character of the object. A special collectible for lovers of ethnographic art and antiques.
