Description from the seller

XXL Paperweight / Paperweight VSL Val Saint Lambert gray-blue "french blue"

The hand-cut, color-overlaid paperweights from the famous Belgian glassworks “Cristalleries du Val Saint-Lambert” were produced—aside from a few designs shown in catalogs and officially marketed—mostly as after-work pieces by the glasscutters.

Thus, for example, in the book “Presse-papiers de prestige – Presse-papiers populaires” one reads about VLS paperweights: “The glassmakers created the paperweights during their breaks or after hours. Then they could let their imagination run free. Unlike serial production, they could give free rein to their ideas. Often the glass cutter refined the mass of the colored crystal. In this way we did each other small favors. And the supervisors turned a blind eye or sometimes laid a hand themselves. There are no signatures—except those we know were made by Charles Graffart; no dates or at most a few assumed or derived ones, when two first names intertwine for a marriage, when a name signals retirement. (…) Nevertheless, the old Val Saint-Lambert paperweights, for the reasons mentioned above, have not yet received the recognition they deserve. This is all the more paradoxical since they are becoming rarer. Only the wealthiest museums, the finest private or public collections possess one or the other specimen.”

These crystal objects are therefore single pieces, dating roughly from the period between 1880 and 1930.

The unusually richly cut paperweight is made of clear crystal with a rare gray-blue overlay ("french blue"). It features four side windows and one top window. Between them, star-shaped cut motifs can be seen.
At the bottom it bears a ground star with 12 points.

Measurements (approx.):

Weight: 1033 g
Largest diameter: 9.2 cm
Height: 7.8 cm
