Description from the seller
STROZZI, Giulio. The Built Venice. Venice: Girolamo Piuti, 1626.
12°. Allegorical title page with image of Venice, portrait of Strozzi engraved by M. Antonio Romito, 24 full-page plates opening with each canto. Contemporary calf binding, spine decorated in gold, gilded edges.
A fine edition of the Strozzi poem, released in its first edition in 1623 and reprinted several times.
The Built Venice is an heroic epic poem in octaves that celebrates the mythical and historical origins of Venice, focusing in particular on resistance to barbarian invasions and the figure of Attila. The structure includes the "Argomenti" drafted by Francesco Cortesi, brief verse or prose summaries that precede each canto to guide the reader through the plot. The work represents a significant example of seventeenth-century encomiastic literature, aimed at consolidating the myth of the "Serenissima" through the epic form.
The volume shows traces of a defined collecting history: on the flyleaf or secondary title page appears a handwritten ownership note in period ink ("Ex l. b. Ant. Guillaume d’Orbigny"), attesting its provenance from a private French library. The text ends with the final register and the publisher's imprint "Di Ordine dell'Autore".
