Frank Stella:
Frank Stella is regarded as one of the most influential figures of postwar American art and a pioneer of Minimal Art. Inspired by Piet Mondrian's abstract compositions and Mark Rothko’s color field paintings, Stella developed a style characterized by geometric precision and clear structures. His famous "Black Paintings" engage in close dialogue with the serial works of Donald Judd and the light installations of Dan Flavin. Stella shared with artists like Ellsworth Kelly and Josef Albers an interest in the pure impact of color and form. His sculptural works also bear parallels to the spatial constructions of Richard Serra and the optical effects of Victor Vasarely. The movement and dynamism in Alexander Calder’s mobiles also find echoes in Stella’s later three-dimensional works. Conceptual art by Sol LeWitt and the color dynamics of Barnett Newman and Helen Frankenthaler influenced his thinking. In the more complex reliefs and sculptures of his later years, there are also references to Jackson Pollock’s gestural abstraction. Frank Stella understood how to blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and architecture – an approach that connects him with numerous important artists of his time.
