Description from the seller
Murano Uranium Glass Basket — Orange & Vaseline Glass, Italy, 1950s–1960s
A striking small decorative basket in luminous Murano glass, dating to the mid-20th century. The elegant, elongated oval handle rises fluidly from a sculptural base, creating a refined, almost organic silhouette typical of postwar Italian design. The piece is executed in a vivid combination of warm amber-orange glass layered with uranium (vaseline) glass, producing a beautiful contrast between fiery tones and a subtle greenish glow.
Under ultraviolet light, the uranium content reveals its characteristic fluorescence, giving the object an almost magical presence. Uranium glass, widely produced from the 19th century through the mid-20th century, is no longer made in the same way today, and has become increasingly appreciated by collectors for both its visual effect and historical curiosity.
Murano, the legendary glassmaking island near Venice, has been at the forefront of artistic glass production for centuries. By the 1950s–60s, Murano workshops were exploring bold colors, fluid forms, and innovative techniques—often blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design. This piece reflects that spirit perfectly: expressive yet balanced, decorative yet refined.
Compact in size (approx. 19 cm high), it works beautifully as a display object—on a shelf, console, or within a curated glass collection. It also makes a distinctive and memorable gift for lovers of unusual glass and mid-century design.
Will be carefully packaged, well protected and insured
