Germain Van der Steen, born Germain Vandersteen Mauduit Larive on July 7, 1897 in Versailles and died April 12, 1985 in Garches, was a French painter.
Germain Van der Steen went to study in England and would graduate from Oxford.
Mobilized during World War I, he was gassed.
After the armistice, he became a paint dealer in the Étoile district in Paris. Passionate about painting, he painted at night. He was self-taught and his art is linked to naïve painting. Three periods can be distinguished in his artistic career: the non-figurative period, then the period of imaginary, multicolored plants with draperies, and finally the bestiary period, where he mainly represents cats and birds. His colors are very vivid.
Germain Van der Steen exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1944.
