"This Rodin museum exhibition catalogue brings into dialogue the works of American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) with those of Rodin, in a strong dialogue. The former relentlessly pursues perfect form through his lens, the latter relies on the gesture’s flashes throughout his career, nothing seems to connect the two artists. The former chases form, the latter stubbornly captures movement in matter.
There is nothing spontaneous about Mapplethorpe; meticulous, whereas Rodin yields to the lightning of the gesture, even if that means accepting accidental expression. The highly controlled plans of one echo the tormented busts of the other. The fragmentation of bodies, their compulsive examination, the drapery that barely conceals them, sign a common, also sensual, quest. Separated by nearly a century, the two works show countless similarities and produce striking diptychs."
