The Badger Brass Manufacturing Company Solar carbide/acetylene brass bicycle lamp, circa 1900, unrestored, 19 cm long, made in the United States.
Description from the seller
An antique brass bicycle lamp, specifically a carbide or acetylene light popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Similar models, such as those made by the Badger Brass Manufacturing Company, were marketed as "Solar" lamps.
Type: Carbide/Acetylene gas lamp.
Material: Brass construction.
Function: Produced light by reacting water with calcium carbide to create flammable gas.
Features: Includes faceted side lenses for visibility from the sides.
Identification Details
• Likely Maker: The Badger Brass Mfg. Co., USA. While this lacks marks, this exact silhouette—characterized by the rounded rear gas chamber, knurled bottom cap, and specific faceted side "jewels"—is a signature of their Solar model.
• Period of Construction: Late Victorian to Edwardian era, typically dated c. 1899 to 1910.
• Alternative Possibilities: If not American, lamps with very similar aesthetics were produced in Europe during the same period:
o France: Brands like Vitaphare produced similar brass carbide lamps around 1910.
o United Kingdom: Manufacturers like Joseph Lucas Ltd. (e.g., the "Calcia" or "King of the Road" models) dominated the British market from the 1890s through the 1920s.
o Netherlands/Belgium: Handmade brass carbide lamps of this style were also common in these regions between 1910 and 1920.
Condition: In good unrestored condition. Dents, scratches and tarnish, commensurate with age.
The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by registered and insured post with a track and trace number. It can also be collected from Amsterdam, The Netherlands
