Patriotic novel by Jules Clarétie, original illustrated edition of 1886, published in Paris by Calmann Lévy, Publisher. Work crowned by the French Academy.
Rare edition limited to 225 copies, all numbered, printed on vellum paper at the cuve of the Marais factories. The present copy bears the number 207.
Red half-morocco binding with corners, spine with raised bands ornamented with gold fillets, boards covered with marbled paper in red and orange tones, marbled edges to match — binding of high quality, very probably made to order.
The copy features two provenance ex-libris: the heraldic one engraved by A. Lehideux-Vernimmen, and the illustrated one of collector Georges Jal.
Overall very good condition, paper slightly yellowed due to age, in keeping with a copy of 140 years.
