Samonji, who forged swords based in Hakata, Chikuzen Province (Fukuoka Prefecture) from the late Kamakura period to the early Nanboku-chō period, has been known by that name since ancient times. This stems from his practice of inscribing the single character “左” (left), said to be an abbreviation of his name, Saemon Saburō, on his blades.
Numerous examples of such famed swords by Samonji are featured in this volume.
