A vibrant gestural abstract composition by René Mels dated 1975. On a background of watercolor wash in rich, luminous tones (deep blues, purples, pinks and greens/yellows), the artist unfolds a dense and energetic network of black strokes, hatchings and vigorous curves. The gesture is free, swirling and full of vitality, creating a rhythmic dynamism and strong chromatic expressiveness.
This work perfectly illustrates the artist’s mastery of lyric abstraction, where line and color unite in a powerful and poetic movement.
Biography of the artist:
René Mels (1909-1977), pseudonym of René Meulemans, is a major Belgian artist of the postwar period. Trained at the University of Louvain and then in Brussels, he develops an intense graphic practice. After 1945, he works in Paris in the studios of Stanley William Hayter and Johnny Friedlaender.
Known for his abstract and semi-figurative compositions as well as his series of etchings, he was an active member of the Belgian School. His works are in the collections of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (Brussels) and the University of Leuven Museum.
