Beautiful and highly decorative illustrated 19th‑century French edition of Rob Roy by Sir Walter Scott, published in Paris by Librairie Firmin‑Didot et Cie in 1881.

This is the celebrated illustrated edition of Scott’s historical novel, translated into French by M. P. Louisy and richly illustrated with numerous wood‑engraved illustrations, both in the text and full‑page, by leading artists of the period: E. Courboin, Godefroy Durand, Riou and H. Toussaint.

The book is bound in an elegant full red leather prize binding, lavishly decorated in gilt, with ornate tooling to the spine and boards and all edges gilt. The front cover bears a gilt laurel wreath with the inscription “École Jean‑Baptiste‑Say”, indicating that this copy was awarded as a school prize. Inside is the original printed prize label from the City of Paris, awarded for Morale, French and Calligraphy, dated July 1911 (approx.), and signed by the director.
The binding is signed at the foot of the spine “A. Lenègre, Rel.”, a Parisian binder active in the late 19th and early 20th century, adding further interest and quality to the volume.
