Description from the seller
Fine copy of "The Mysterious Island" by Jules Verne, in Hetzel's famous blue banner binding.
This edition is richly illustrated with 154 vignettes by Jules-Descartes Férat.
Characteristics of this copy:
- Binding: original red percaline. The front board features a beautiful gilt decoration, though somewhat faded with time. The blue title band is well preserved.
- Spine: ornate, with a few signs of wear at the headcaps and on the hinges.
- Interior: Complete. Occasional foxing (common on paper of the period) not affecting readability. The title page is clean.
- Special feature: Contains the precious catalog "AI" (mentioned "In preparation for the year 1881"), which allows dating this print precisely to the end of 1880.
- Edges: Fully gilt, retaining a beautiful shine.
Condition:
The copy is in a wholly respectable state for a book of nearly 150 years. A slight sunning of the spine and some rubbing at the corners are noted. The book’s structure remains solid.
The Mysterious Island is considered by many to be Jules Verne's masterpiece, blending Robinsonade and science fiction with the return of Captain Nemo. This copy, with its period catalog, is a prized item for any bibliophile looking to complete a Hetzel collection.
Fast and careful shipping.
