Description from the seller
For sale is a fascinating piece of watchmaking history from the famous workshop of Thomas Earnshaw, London. Earnshaw is regarded as one of the most significant watchmakers in history; his groundbreaking work was decisive for the perfection of the marine chronometer. Watches from his manufacture are today regarded as technical cultural heritage in major collections worldwide, including the British Museum in London and renowned German watch museums.
Technical details & features:
• Movement: High-quality English full-plate movement with fusee chain for power regulation.
• Escapement: Classic English anchor escapement.
• Luxurious feature: The movement features a splendid diamond endstone on the balance cock – a feature typically found only in the highest-quality precision instruments.
• Signature: The movement is hand-engraved with “T. Earnshaw, London No. 1471.”
• Case: Solid sterling silver, hallmarks for London 1831. Case maker’s mark “JD” (James Dow), pendant mark “TH” (Thomas Hardy).
Condition & Functionality:
The watch was wound by me very carefully with a single “click” to test function. The balance starts immediately and the movement ticks. Nevertheless, the watch is explicitly offered as needing revision. Since the service history is unknown, the movement should be professionally cleaned and oiled before continuous operation to preserve the historical substance.
