The Veil, a 2026 oil painting by Levko from Ukraine, created in the 2020s in a Romanticism style and depicting a solitary female portrait.
Description from the seller
In The Veil, Levko presents a solitary female figure absorbed in a moment of quiet introspection. The subject, rendered with luminous precision, is framed by a soft landscape that recedes into an idealised distance, where architecture and nature coexist in calm harmony.
The act of combing the hair becomes central to the composition, transforming a simple gesture into a contemplative ritual. The flowing red hair, meticulously painted, contrasts with the cool tones of the garment and the translucent veil, which softens the figure’s presence and introduces a subtle sense of distance.
Levko’s approach reflects a sustained engagement with 19th-century romantic painting, particularly the Pre-Raphaelite tradition, where attention to detail, clarity of form, and symbolic suggestion converge. The figure appears suspended between portrait and archetype, her gaze directed beyond the viewer, suggesting an inward narrative rather than an external one.
The work balances decorative refinement with a measured psychological stillness, inviting a slower and more reflective mode of viewing.

Artist Bio
Levko (b. 1972, Kyiv, Ukraine) is a contemporary painter whose work draws on the romantic and decorative traditions of 19th-century European painting, particularly the refined aesthetic of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
He studied at the Kyiv State Technical University of Construction and Architecture, where an early engagement with structure and proportion informs the compositional clarity of his paintings. Since the early 2000s, he has devoted his practice exclusively to painting, developing a distinct figurative language rooted in precision, surface refinement, and historical awareness.
His compositions are centred on idealised female figures, often set within carefully constructed natural or architectural environments. Through gesture, gaze, and the use of drapery and botanical elements, his works introduce a subtle symbolic dimension, positioning the figure between narrative presence and timeless archetype.
His work is held in private collections across Europe, the United States, the Middle East, and Asia.
