Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911. From a young age he felt a strong religious vocation that led him to enter the cloistered monastery in Pietrasanta, where he stayed for three years, studying philosophy, before dedicating himself, as a self-taught artist, to artistic research, which would lead him to exhibit in numerous shows in Italy and abroad.
A man of faith, he believes that only through art can one reach the divine. And this belief will underlie all his work:
"I try to make emptiness – Gentilini declared – This emptiness provokes a certain catharsis in me: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I reevaluate them, but I never know how I will fall into the painting, and this is the realization of a truth toward the sign never thought of."
He was an artist who practiced asceticism, to imitate the Saint to whom he was devoted. The two natures, human and aesthetic, coincide perfectly.
