Solid oak Victorian bobbin side table from the United Kingdom, dated to the 20th century, with dimensions 51 cm high, 27 cm wide and 27 cm deep, finished in traditional French polish (shellac) and in good condition with minor signs of aging.
Description from the seller
Antique Oak Side Table in Bobbin (Spool-Turned) Style – England, ca. 1880–1900
A refined and characterful antique side table, crafted from solid oak and dating to the late 19th century. This piece is a fine example of the distinctive bobbin (spool-turned) style, immediately recognizable by its rhythmic, turned legs that lend both elegance and sculptural presence.
The rectangular top, subtly shaped with gently curved edges, rests on four richly turned legs. These are united by an X-shaped stretcher with a central turned finial, a feature that enhances both structural integrity and decorative appeal. The table is finished in a traditional French polish (shellac), giving the oak a deep, warm lustre while beautifully highlighting the natural grain.
A compact yet visually striking piece, ideal as a side table, plant stand, or accent table in both classic and eclectic interiors.
Historical Context
The bobbin or spool-turned style emerged prominently during the mid 19th century, particularly within the Gothic and Elizabethan Revival movements. Advances in steam-powered lathes allowed craftsmen to produce these intricate turned forms with greater precision and consistency, making such furniture both fashionable and widely appreciated during the Victorian period.
French polish, a labor-intensive finishing technique using multiple hand-applied layers of shellac, was the hallmark of quality furniture at the time. Its depth and richness remain unmatched by modern finishes.
