Description from the seller
Aceh Peurise Teumaga / Lembaga – Panglima Shield with Seven Star-Shaped Bosses – Sumatra – ca. 19th century
Beschrijving
A fine Acehnese peurise teumaga / lembaga, a traditional round shield from Aceh, northern Sumatra. This type is the metal variant of the Acehnese peurise shield and is usually associated with local martial and ceremonial use.
The shield is made of a yellow copper alloy. The front is richly decorated with concentric engraved lines, punched ornament and geometric star motifs. It has a scalloped outer edge and seven raised bosses: one central boss and six surrounding bosses placed on star-shaped decorative fields. This seven-star arrangement corresponds with the type often described in the trade as a panglima shield.
The reverse shows age-related patina, oxidation and visible fastening points. There is a defect/restoration area near the central boss. The rear cord/wire construction is present but should not be assumed to be original.
Comparable Acehnese peurise teumaga shields are generally dated to the 19th century, although the exact date of this particular example cannot be proven with certainty.
