Description from the seller
Jane ROUQUET (1879-?)
"Bouquet de fleurs"
Oil on canvas originally from the F. DUPRÉ house,
Signed bottom left and dated 1900,
Beautiful luminous and colorful work by the female artist from the Aude, Jane Rouquet, depicting a bouquet of flowers on a pedestal in a post-Impressionist style, in the vein of the painter Achille Laugé (1861-1944).
The details are meticulous. The colors are harmonious. This work will find a place in any interior, even the most modern.
We have only limited information about this talented painter, born in 1879 in Carcassonne and active at the beginning of the 20th century. Daughter of the engraver, journalist and director of the "Revue Méridionale", and of the French poet Achille Rouquet, Jane collaborated with her brother Auguste in the development of wood engravings for her father. As a family, they illustrated and engraved works by Auguste Fourès and Prosper Assions Estieu, among others.
Contemporary criticism recognized in her a painter of real value.
She exhibited in 1908 at the Galerie du Capitole two works, "Le Campestre" and "Vue de mer".
Around 1915, her father settled permanently in Paris with his children Jane and her brother Auguste.
Jane Rouquet participated in exhibitions in Parisian galleries, notably in 1912 at the Galerie Max Rodrigues and in the era’s Artistic Salons (Salon des Indépendants of 1912: works on the theme of flowers).
We can note two other works by the artist that appeared at Bonham’s in April 2025:
- "Les jardins en fleurs, 1907" dimensions 32 x 40 cm - sold for £2,304
- "Arbres sur la côte" dimensions 32.4 x 40.5 cm - sold for £1,216
Note: Some very small, ancient restorations, without impact on the work, should be noted.
Dimensions: 38 x 46 cm without frame and 48 x 56 cm with its original gilded wood frame (a few discreet touches to the frame gilding should be noted).
