Description from the seller
Max Agostini (1914-1997)
"Bouquet de fleurs"
Oil on canvas,
Signed at the bottom right,
Stamp of the Martin Caille Gallery; various exhibition and archive numbers on the back of the canvas,
Provenance: Martin-Caille Gallery in Paris (stamps on the back) then private collection.
Beautiful luminous work with strong contrast by the Corsican-born painter Max Agostini, depicting a bouquet of flowers—most likely daisies or anemones—in a vase on a mantelpiece.
The artist uses a palette of bright, luminous colors that bring his painting to life.
Leader of the contemporary impressionists, the painter MAX-AGOSTINI was born in Paris in 1914, of Corsican descent through his grandparents. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and discovered a true talent for Impressionism.
Drafted into the French Army for five years at the outset of World War II, MAX-AGOSTINI was held as a prisoner for three years.
After the war, he was noticed for his excellence as a portraitist and landscape painter in Châteauroux, where he worked for several years. Later, he settled in Gargilesse in the Berry and in Provence.
In January 1997, he was still painting some of his finest canvases a few days before his hospitalisation.
He is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest colorists of his time.
Dimensions: 46 x 55 cm without a frame and 65 x 74 cm with the original gilded wooden frame.
