With this square-format work, Medsan demonstrates a beautiful technical and stylistic versatility. Moving away from post-impressionist impasto and the frenetic Pop Art mashups of his previous series, the artist here explores a softer and more poetic facet of Japanese art. This composition draws its inspiration from bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women) and the pared-down elegance of the early 20th-century Shin-hanga movement.

The scene, of great serenity, features a young woman with long ebony hair, wearing a red kimono adorned with delicate floral patterns gently slipped over her shoulder. Seated on the edge of a circular wooden onsen (hot spring bath), she bathes her legs in the clear water, her hand skimming the surface to create light ripples. The atmosphere is deeply dreamlike: a monumental golden moon illuminates the scene, reflecting perfectly on the water’s surface among lotus flowers. Wisps of steam rise gracefully, mingling with fluttering sakura petals and stylized clouds drawn with fine lines.

From an objective point of view, this stylistic evolution is particularly successful. The abandonment of 3D and of over-texturing in favor of a clear line (ligne claire), a precise black outline, and a palette of soft, slightly muted colors (blue-greys, carmine red, gold) give the work a timeless and soothing dimension. The faux aged paper frame encircling the image reinforces this illusion of an authentic print.
