Description from the seller
Neoclassical fireplace figure around 1900 – patinated terracotta – female allegory
Fireplace figure / salon figure, neoclassical female allegory, patinated terracotta, around 1900
Decorative antiquated-looking fireplace or salon figure made of baked terracotta with an authentically appearing gray-brown wash or oxide patina in bronze-like finish. Depicted is a seated female figure in a classical dress, in a calm contemplative pose, with a ball- or apple-shaped attribute.
The figure appears to have been produced using mold-making technique and finished by hand; the red-burning ceramic shards are visible at small abrasion spots. The underside shows typical aging, drying and firing traces of an older ceramic object.
Stylistically to be classified within Historicism / Fin de Siècle, probably Continental Europe (likely France or Belgium), ca. 1885–1915. Probably originally part of a fireplace ensemble or decorative salon set.
Material: Terracotta, patinated
Technique: Mold casting/formed, fired, patinated
Dimensions: Height about 19.4 cm
Weight: about 769 g
Condition:
Age-appropriate good condition with authentic surface patina, light abrasion marks, small age-related surface irregularities and signs of use; no detectable major restorations.
Decorative applied arts object from the period around 1900 with a classical character.
