Description from the seller
Important Qing Dynasty Carved Red Lacquer Hanging Panel with Scholar Landscape Scene
Description
This is an exceptional and finely executed Qing Dynasty carved red lacquer hanging panel of significant artistic quality. The rectangular panel is carved from numerous layers of lacquer, creating remarkable depth, texture, and three-dimensional detail.
The composition is carefully arranged and richly decorated. The lower section features finely carved rocks, trees, and a stylized Buddhist wan (卍) motif, all rendered with great precision. At the center is an elegant architectural scene with pavilions and terraces set within a mountainous landscape. A scholar is depicted reading while overlooking a lake, rocks, and natural scenery below. Above, swirling clouds and mist enhance the poetic atmosphere of the composition.
The overall design conveys a strong sense of harmony and contemplation, reflecting the aesthetic ideals of traditional Chinese art. The reverse is finished in black lacquer.
Based on its style, quality, and craftsmanship, I believe this panel was originally intended as an important decorative hanging panel, possibly for a high-status interior or palace-related setting.
Provenance
Private French collection.
Dimensions
Height: 58 cm
Width: 40 cm
Condition
Overall good antique condition. There is a visible flaw/chip to the lower right corner of the panel and another area of damage on the upper section. These imperfections are reflected in the photographs and are consistent with the age of the piece. Despite these condition issues, the panel remains highly decorative and displays exceptionally well.
Please note: We have provided clear photographs of the from multiple angles. If you require additional images or specific viewing angles, please contact Catawiki for further assistance
