STATUE D'ANCÊTRE CHAMBA, a 40 cm tall wooden sculpture from the Chamba people of Nigeria, authentic original, sold with a stand.
Description from the seller
Origin: Nigeria
Tribe name: Chamba
Material: Wood
Dimension: 40 cm
Shipping mode: Colissimo within 24-48h, open
This piece is an ancestral statue (or a protective spirit) from the Chamba people, located in the Benue Valley region in northeast Nigeria.
The Chamba art is renowned for its minimalist and cubist aesthetics, often compared to that of their neighbors, the Mumuye.
The Head: It features a very stylized ovoid or arrowhead shape. The face is simplified with circular eyes (often discs or incisions) and a mouth slightly open protruding forward.
The Torso and Limbs: The body is designed around a central cylindrical column. The arms, freed from the torso but following its curve, form dynamic angles that create a visual rhythm unique to the Chamba “volumetric” style.
Sexual Attributes: Although the body seems androgynous at first glance, the presence of small conical breasts and a coiffure or a bump at the top of the skull may indicate a female figure or a representation of fertility.
Ancestor Cult: These statues, sometimes called tauwa or kona, generally serve as receptacles for ancestral spirits. They are kept in sacred shrines or family sanctuaries.
Protection: They are used to protect the community, promote harvests, or treat illnesses. Their role is to establish a bridge between the world of the living and the world of spirits.
Ritual Use: The dark, sometimes crusty patina suggests that the object has received libations (food or oil offerings) over time, thereby activating its spiritual power.
The piece is carved from a dense, hard wood.
The deep brown patina bears witness to age and prolonged ritual handling. Visible desiccation cracks (notably on the face and torso) are characteristic of natural wood aging in this region of Africa.
In summary, this is a classic example of Chamba statuary, prized by collectors for its balance between geometric abstraction and spiritual presence.
