“The series 'Papaveri rossi' by Mario Giacomelli is a striking collection of color works and abstract landscapes created in the 1960s and 1970s on the Colfiorito plateau and Castelluccio di Norcia. These works are renowned for several characteristics:
- Color choice; Giacomelli is universally known for his unmistakable, high-contrast black and white. The series, however, stands out for a delicate and constructive use of color, with an almost painterly approach.
- Subjects: The centerpiece is the flowering fields of poppies, immersed in the nature and landscape of Umbria.
- Abstraction and the link with Burri: Aerial and close-up framings transform the fields into true abstract canvases. This thread highlights Giacomelli's strong human and artistic connection with the great informal master Alberto Burri.
The series has been rediscovered and brought to a wide audience through a monographic exhibition hosted by the National Gallery of Umbria (curated by Alessandro Sarteanesi), which brought these rare unpublished shots to enthusiasts' attention.
