Antique violin by Jacobus Steiner, labelled and likely made in Austria around 1635 or later, in good physical condition with a playable sound, weighing about 440 g, 59.5 cm in total length, includes bow, original parts, an extra object, and a green‑felt case with a tuning fork.
Description from the seller
I am offering here a very old violin.
According to the inscription from the time around 1635 or later continues to be legible: Jacobus Steiner in Absam
probe oenipontum 1635 or later
The year is unfortunately no longer exactly readable.
Brand: Jacobus Steiner
Weight: 440 grams
Size:
Overall length of the instrument: 59.5 cm
Body width bottom: 20.5 cm
Body width top: 17 cm
Body height: 35.5 cm
Body depth: 4 cm
Total body height: 6.5 cm
Total height incl. sides: 10 cm
The sound body is in good condition and shows no cracks.
The violin shows on the outside a few small defects. These are visible as wear of the body at the places where the instrument comes into contact with the hands and the player's body.
I am not an experienced player, but I was able to draw a few very beautiful tones from the instrument.
The body is free of cracks.
Year of manufacture: 1635 or later, though I am not completely sure about that either.
The instrument is in a violin case with an emblem from the well-known violin maker Alwin Sachs from Einbeck i.H.
The violin was probably equipped by Alwin Sachs from Einbeck i.H. with another case.
Probably because the original case was too old and could no longer be restored.
It may well be that this violin was restored by him. This cannot be proven.
It was probably made in Austria in the beautiful Tyrol, though I am not entirely sure about that either.
Absam is a nice little place there and known for its history in violin making.
This fine piece is delivered in an older case, equipped with a kind of green felt.
Additionally, there is an old tuning fork and a bow included.
I purchased the violin at auction many years ago.
Unfortunately, I no longer have any documents about it.
Therefore I do not offer any guarantee of authenticity.
The back of this violin is adorned with a wonderful carving, which suggests a masterpiece in workmanship.
This violin may be a masterpiece by him personally, or since the master himself trained apprentices in the art of violin making, it could also be a masterpiece by one of his apprentices.
A few notes about Jacobus Steiner
Jakobus Steiner, also known as Jacobus or Jacob, was born between 1617 and 1621 in Absam, Tyrol, and died in late 1683 in Absam. He was a Tyrolean violin maker who completed his education from 1626 to 1630 and later perfected his violin making craft in Italy, possibly in Venice. Steiner was the son of a mountain miner and enjoyed a solid education that gave him good knowledge of the Italian language and musical training in Hall and Innsbruck. He sold his instruments to monasteries and courts and took no apprentices, which meant his knowledge of violin making was not passed on. Steiner was also active in 1649 as an alto singer and assistant of the parish choir in Meran and in 1669 he received the title of “Imperial Servant.” In 1656 he became the owner of a house in Absam’s upper village, today known as the “Steiner House.”
