Description
In this masterful surrealist composition from 1969, Hans Beers unfolds his dreamlike and poetic universe. Before a background with architectural hints of an intimate interior with panels stretched like stage curtains, two black masculine silhouettes, powerful and silent, stand on either side of a window opened to the imaginary.

In the center, two human profiles – a woman and a man – become true anthropomorphic landscapes: their bodies and heads transform into fantastic cities, inhabited by colorful houses, bridges, Gothic churches and slender spires. Verdant hills, a blue sky traversed by white doves symbolizing peace or spiritual elevation, and meticulous architectural details mingle with poetic fluidity.

The striking contrast between the dark silhouettes, almost spectators, and the chromatic and narrative richness of the central figures creates a mysterious tension: are we looking outward or contemplating the dreams and memories that inhabit the human soul?

An emblematic work of Beers’ early maturity, this gouache combines the precision of drawing with the luminous richness of gouache and pencil, in a vibrant palette typical of his surrealist style. A rare, intimate and powerful piece that invites contemplation and reverie.

Artist biography
Hans Beers is a Dutch surrealist painter born in 1946. Trained at the St. Joost Academy in Breda (the Netherlands), he settled early in Antwerp, Belgium, where he fully integrated into the Antwerp School art scene.
From the late 1960s, he developed a personal artistic language deeply rooted in surrealism. His gouaches, a technique he masters with remarkable virtuosity, are characterized by rich, imaginative, and dreamlike imagery. He fuses elements of daily reality, stylized human figures and fantastical landscapes to explore themes dear to surrealism: the unconscious, the paradoxes of perception, dreams and the porous boundary between the real and the imaginary.

His works, often populated by enigmatic characters, anthropomorphic cities and symbolic compositions, have been exhibited in numerous galleries in Belgium and internationally. Highly sought after in the art market, they regularly appear at auctions and in private collections. Hans Beers remains today a major representative of Belgian-Dutch figurative surrealism of the second half of the 20th century.
