Description from the seller
Very rare edition of the Goojratee Punchopakhyan, printed in Bombay (present-day Mumbai) in 1840.
Book details
The book is a Gujarati-language translation (indicated in the text as "Goojratee") of the Panchatantra, a famous collection of Indian animal fables originally written in Sanskrit.
Title: Punchopakhyan (a variant transliteration of Panchatantra).
Publisher: It was published by the Bombay Native Education Society. This society, founded in 1822 by figures such as Jagannath Shankarseth, aimed to promote education among the local population and provide instructional materials in vernacular languages.
Lithography: The volume was "lithographed for the Society" by A. Viegas. Lithography was an innovative printing technique for the time in India, often used to produce texts in local languages with non-Latin scripts.
Historical context
This edition dates from the period when formal education in India was under British influence, but there was still a strong commitment to preserve and disseminate Indian classics in the languages spoken by the people. The society's reports are today considered extremely rare and are held in a few select libraries, such as the British Library or the Bombay University Library.
