Description from the seller

GIOVERDI (pseudonym of Mario Verdini, 1960) develops his pictorial research through a dialogue structured between historical memory and contemporaneity. His training, deeply rooted in the study of Byzantine art and in the experimentation with ancient techniques—from encaustic to tempera to egg tempera—translates into the creation of oil paintings, progressively elaborating a stylistic signature in which tradition and contemporaneity find a formal balance that recuperates the value of time and stratification. The artist’s pictorial production predominantly features deserted cities and lagoon landscapes, designed according to compositions charged with metaphorical value. The result is a quiet communication, balanced between dreamlike vision and sensation of the real, where the absence of human figures increases the narrative tension. Located between iconography and contemporary aesthetics, GIOVERDI’s paintings reflect on time, absence, and perception, finding a place in religious contexts, private collections, and exhibition circuits in Italy, Europe, and the United States.

SUNSET OVER THE LAGOON 60x80
The image, dominated by a low horizon, leaves the sky with the main role. The sunset explodes in an intense, almost visceral red, crossed by fine golden striations that seem to scratch the surface of the color. They are not regular lines: they intertwine, dissolve, as if the sun were struggling to hold onto the last fragments of light. The lagoon below is turbid, dense, rendered with tactile brushstrokes of a muted green. The water does not reflect the sky faithfully, but swallows it, creating a tension between what is above and what is below. In the center, slightly off-center, a single boat. It is still, almost suspended, painted with essential strokes: a dark, opaque silhouette that contrasts with the sky’s vibration. There are no people, nor signs of movement. The boat becomes a point of silence, an interruption in the chromaticity that surrounds it.
The whole has something contemplative but unsettling: the red of the sky suggests beauty, but also a sense of imminent end. The golden striations do not console; they seem rather like fissures of light in a heavy atmosphere. It is a painting that does not tell a precise place, but a suspended state of mind between calm and tension.
