Inner side of front cover with remnants of old label.

Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel (Orleans 1850 – Paris 1913) was a French painter and illustrator best known for his water-colours for children's books..
Born in Orléans, the subject of Jeanne d'Arc ("the Virgin of Orleans") must have been very dear to his heart.
His book on her life, for which he created both the text for children and the lithographs is considered his masterpiece. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in children’s book illustrations of the 19th century
