18th–19th Century Multan Blue and White Glazed Earthenware Tile
Multan, present-day Pakistan
Handcrafted glazed earthenware tile originating from the historic ceramic production center of Multan, renowned for its distinctive blue and turquoise architectural ceramics. The tile is decorated in cobalt blue and white floral motifs against a vivid turquoise ground, featuring stylized scrolling foliage and blossoms in a traditional Islamic ornamental composition.
Multan tiles from the 18th and 19th centuries were widely used in architectural decoration for mosques, shrines, and traditional buildings throughout the region. This example displays the characteristic vibrant glazing and hand-painted decoration associated with historic Multani ceramic craftsmanship.
The surface shows an attractive craquelure throughout the glaze together with visible irregularities from hand production, enhancing the tile’s authentic antique character and decorative appeal. A fine piece suitable for display as an individual decorative object, within an architectural collection, or as part of an Islamic art and ceramics collection.
