Description from the seller
Title: Immaculate Conception – Academic devotional style
School: Spanish (19th century)
Style: Academic devotional with Baroque influence
Technique: Oil on canvas
The work represents the Immaculate Conception following traditional iconography: the female figure appears in a gathered and spiritual posture, with hands crossed over the chest and gaze raised to the sky, conveying a deep sense of purity, devotion and transcendence. Her youthful face, with a serene and contemplative expression, is surrounded by a luminous halo with stars, symbol of her celestial nature.
The composition stands out for the soft handling of light, which envelops the figure and creates an atmospheric effect over the dark and neutral background. The color palette is built around warm tones in the skin and light garments, contrasted with the deep blue mantle, generating visual balance and compositional hierarchy. The brushwork is careful and precise, with special attention to modeling the face and hands, as well as the folds of the garment, evidencing a technique typical of the academic tradition.
The frame accompanying the work is carved and gilded wood, with geometric decoration and stepped moldings. It features a finish in aged gold tones combined with darker areas that provide depth and elegance. Its sober yet ornate design reinforces the painting’s classical character, harmoniously integrating with the devotional aesthetics of the piece.
