Description from the seller
Portrait painting "La rose bleue" - 2026
The style of this painting is heavily marked by several influences of early 20th-century modern art, combining elements of Fauvism, Symbolism and figurative abstraction.
That's the most striking characteristic. The use of blue skin for the woman is a purely arbitrary and emotional choice, typical of Fauvism as in Matisse or Derain, where color is freed from its descriptive function to become an end in itself.
The color palette is restrained and complementary: the vivid blue contrasts strongly with the warm gold yellows and the greens in the foreground. This contrast creates a vibrant tension and a dreamlike atmosphere.
The calm composition, the introspective pose of the woman and the use of non-natural colors confer upon the work a mysterious and melancholic atmosphere. The solitary blue flower she holds may be a romantic or philosophical symbol of an unattainable desire or of a spiritual quest. The work seems to evoke a state of mind rather than a realistic scene.
This painting is a modern figurative and expressive work, where color is used for its emotional and symbolic qualities, rather than to faithfully represent reality. It successfully blends the formal rigor of composition with the freedom of non-conventional colors.
