History of the Romans – Victor Duruy – Complete set in 7 volumes – Hachette – 1883-1885 – numerous chromolithographs and fold-out maps
Magnificent complete set of the famous “History of the Romans from the earliest times to the invasion of the barbarians” by Victor Duruy, published by Hachette et Cie in Paris between 1883 and 1885.
Edition richly illustrated including numerous engravings, color chromolithographies, fold-out maps, plans and historical plates.
Volumes present:
Volume I to VII
Dates observed: 1883-1885
Approximate number of pages: 4865
Period bindings with marbled edges
Notable features:
Complete and homogeneous set
Numerous illustrations outside the main text
Large color fold-out maps
Magnificent roman and byzantine chromolithographs, all protected by serpent motifs.
Decorative plates of mosaics, shields, ancient scenes, statues, plans and historical maps.
The gaps integrated into the archaeological motifs are historically interesting, as 19th-century publishers often reproduced mosaics exactly as they were discovered.
Very good library presence
Condition: Overall good to very good for a 19th-century work. Occasional foxing, mainly on some pages and plates. Solid bindings. Some signs of wear and age-related defects. The fold-out maps and chromolithographs are well preserved.
Rare set in this state of completeness with its plates and maps still present.
Photographs form an integral part of the description.
