Description from the seller
Beautiful Burmese Buddha statue from the Konbaung era / early Mandalay – Burma – 19th century
Nice and ancient representation of a seated Buddha in bronze, originating from Burma (Myanmar), made using the traditional lost-wax technique.
The Buddha is depicted in a meditation posture with the Earth-touching gesture (Bhumisparsha mudra), emblematic iconography of Theravāda Buddhism. The right hand rests toward the ground while the left hand is placed in meditation on crossed legs.
The sculpture features a very beautiful old dark brown patina with traces of gold leaf gilding, visible on the chest and back after production of the statue, and some traces of red polychromy. The finely shaped face with half-closed eyes, long ears, beaded coiffure and the elongated ushnisha are characteristic of Burmese productions from the late Konbaung / early Mandalay period.
The finely decorated polygonal stepped base is also typical of 19th-century Burmese workshops.
The open underside reveals the old cast core and natural oxidation consistent with the object's age.
Konbaung era / early Mandalay – Burma – 19th century
