Description from the seller
This charming original poster from 1902 by the celebrated French illustrator Eugène Ogé promotes Fine Armagnac with humor, theatrical flair and unmistakable Belle Époque charm. The scene shows two startled burglars who, after forcing open a safe in search of money (“galette”), instead discover a bottle of Armagnac that shines like a precious gemstone. The humorous slogan reinforces the message that, even without money, this Fine Armagnac is “a true treasure.” Ogé turns a simple advertising message into a short comic story, with exaggerated facial expressions, dramatic lighting and a strong composition that immediately draws the eye.
Eugène Ogé was one of the important figures in early 20th-century French poster design, known for his humorous characters and playful storytelling. This poster is an excellent example of his style with vivid colors, caricatured figures and a strong sense of movement, typical of a time when posters were not only advertising but also popular art seen in the streets. Printed by the renowned Paris lithography house Charles Verneau, the work benefits from the high technical quality and rich color printing that made French posters of this period so admired.
Beyond its direct comedic appeal, the poster reflects the spirit of Belle Époque advertising, in which imagination and humor were essential to capture the public’s attention. Today it is a beautifully preserved piece of visual culture, an amusing story, a tribute to French craftsmanship and evidence of the golden age of poster art.
Original poster in immaculate condition professionally mounted on linen.
