Corneille (1922-2010) - Musica

This special work by Corneille from 1991 is a striking example of his playful, expressive visual language and his ongoing drive to experiment. Executed in mixed media on paper, this piece immediately stands out for its use of an original substrate: sheet music. This choice gives the work an extra dimension, in which image and sound meet, so to speak.

The presentation features a characteristic, almost childlike figure – a recurring motif within Corneille's oeuvre – built from strong, spontaneous brushstrokes in black and gray tones. The combination of lines, splashes, and movement suggests both freedom and rhythm, with the underlying musical notation subtly playing a role in the composition. The result is a dynamic whole in which structure and spontaneity reinforce each other.

The work is signed and dated (1991), which contributes to its authenticity and collectability. Moreover, it is particularly beautifully presented: the warm yellow matting lets the work come into its own and forms a lively contrast with the subdued tones of the composition. The richly decorated gold-coloured Baroque frame adds a classical and luxurious element, giving the whole a striking and elegant appearance.

With a size of 65 x 55 cm including the frame (and 36 x 26 cm without the frame) this is a compact yet powerful work that fits well in both modern and classical settings. The unique character – partly due to the use of sheet music as the support – makes this piece a special and rare object for the Cobra art enthusiast and for Corneille's work.
