From the work of Malick Sidibé we first know the documentary photographs, taken at after-hours parties organized by young people, friends of music and freedom, as the country prepared for independence. In 1962, he opened “Studio Malick” in Bamako. The studio portrait will constitute the major part of his work. People come from everywhere to have their portrait taken by the eye of Bamako…
Noticed at the first Bamako Photography Meetings, he has been exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, then in major galleries and museums around the world. He received the Hasselblad Award in 2003 and the Golden Lion in 2007.
