Hello! If you are looking for a unique and unconventional painting created with a noble technique and you feel drawn to the mysterious and majestic world of nature, you’ve come to the right place. I am an experienced artist and painter from Poland. I am strongly inspired by Japanese aesthetics and natural history illustrations from bygone eras. My paintings fit not only private interiors but also spaces such as boutique hotels, cafes, offices, beauty clinics, or studios. For each work I include a certificate of authenticity.
My direct inspiration is the Japanese nihonga technique. The paintings are created on cotton canvas or paper. Paints are ground by hand from Japanese mineral pigments with suihi and homemade glue. I apply using Asian-style brushes, commonly associated with calligraphy. White paint comes from gofun – the Japanese oyster shell powder. I also paint with sumi ink based on water. The gold-finished fragments in my paintings are shulang metal – metal flakes imitating gold. These metallic elements beautifully reflect light, even on cloudy days, and make the painting look slightly different from each angle.
The painting depicts orchids with twisting roots, whose lush, dark green leaves and pinkish-white flowers spread freely on a golden background adorned with a rhythmic, geometric pattern reminiscent of fabric or stained glass. The combination of the organic, untamed nature of the plant with a precisely designed background ornament creates tension between vitality and decorative order.
Hanna Werkowicz (born 1986, Warsaw) is a graduate of the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Warsaw and a prosthetics school. She has also worked as an illustrator, a prop designer for advertising and film, and created about 500 artistic objects for clients around the world. The artist’s main inspirations are Japanese aesthetics and ancient natural history illustrations, with animals and plants at the center of her artistic interests.
In her works, beyond the external form, the artist aims to capture the spirit of the plant or animal, paying homage to the perfect beauty of nature. Her paintings achieve a balance between decorative form and the rawness of natural pigment, giving them a calm, contemplative character.
