Description from the seller
RARE - Jules Bois - Prayer (1895) - Original Edition - Cover by Charles FILIGER
Description:
A monument of symbolism and occultism of the “Fin de Siècle.” Discover this mythical work by Jules Bois, central figure of the esoteric Belle Époque, friend of Huysmans and Mallarmé. This collection is one of the most emblematic publications of the famous Librairie de l'Art Indépendant (Edmond Bailly), which was the hub of the literary and musical avant-garde of the era.
Key points of the copy:
Illustration: Superb lithographed blue cover by Charles FILIGER (signed on the plate). Filiger, mystical artist of the Pont-Aven School and protégé of Gauguin, is exceedingly rare in book illustration.
Edition: True Original Edition of 1895.
Publisher: Librairie de l'Art Indépendant, Paris.
Condition:
Paperback copy as issued. The cover shows a few small signs of age and a slight edge fragility (see photos), which is typical for these fragile era paper editions. Filiger's illustration retains all its strength and depth of blue.
Importance for the collector:
This work is doubly sought after: by bibliophiles for the Edmond Bailly imprint, and by art enthusiasts for Charles Filiger's graphic work, whose appearances on the market are always noteworthy.
