Description from the seller

Floris Jespers is a pioneer of the historical avant-garde in Flanders.

He experimented with impressionism, futurism, cubism and expressionism. But during the 1930s and 40s he also deepened his study of the beauty and simplicity of rural life in Knokke and in the Ardennes.

This drawing is an early work from 1915 in which the influence of Rik Wouters clearly shines through. It succeeds for Jespers here to evoke the beauty of simplicity and the everyday with minimal means.

Artist: Floris Jespers (1889-1965) - signed and dated lower left

Medium: Chinese ink on paper

Dating: 1915

Dimensions: 81x69 and 43x31 cm (sheet)

Seller's Story

Arriere-garde is a rebellious gallery with a trained eye for various forms of beauty: from old master prints and cartography to landscape painting and contemporary masters.
