Artwork description:

In this impressive portrait, Peter Robert Keil’s unmistakable hand is shown in full energy and directness. The face appears like an expressive mask between abstraction and personality – fragmented, intense, and full of psychological tension.

Strong blocks of color in pink, green, blue, red, and black collide, creating a powerful visual dynamism. Especially striking are the oversized eye shapes and the distinctive black line work, which give the work an almost archaic power. The asymmetrical composition intensifies the impression of inner motion and emotional complexity.

The dark right-hand area of the image stands in exciting contrast to the luminous colors of the left half of the face and adds depth to the work. Despite the abstracted form, the portrait remains immediate and has a strong far-reaching impact.

Typical for Keil, the work combines elements of Neo-Expressionism with influences from Pop Art and simultaneously recalls the spontaneous energy of the Berlin and New York art scenes of the 1980s.

The composition exudes joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy – a tribute to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.

His artistically talented mother moved with her son to West Berlin during the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – particularly in expressionist artists and in the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel from East Berlin became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him initial craft skills and painting techniques.
