First edition. Publisher: London, Jennings and Chaplin, 1829–1831. Both parts in one volume. 202 pages, two engraved title pages and 100 steel-engraved plates. 27 × 21 cm. Quarter leather binding of the period.
------------------------------------------------
Complete edition of this monumental Paris views work with a total of 200 finely executed steel engravings after drawings by Augustus Charles Pugin, engraved under the direction of Charles Heath. One of the most significant English Paris books of the early 19th century and at the same time an outstanding document of Romantic enthusiasm for France.
The plates show Paris and its surroundings in extraordinary variety and detail: the Louvre, the Tuileries, Notre-Dame, the Palais-Royal, Place Louis XV, bridges over the Seine, Versailles, Vincennes, as well as numerous street scenes, architectural views, and genre scenes, forming an impressive portrait of the city between the Ancien Régime, Revolutionary memory, and the dawning modern era. Especially appealing is the combination of architectural precision, picturesque staging, and atmospheric lighting, which gives the views remarkable liveliness.
------------------------------------------------
The plates and text pages are predominantly clean and fresh, with occasional light foxing or minimal browning. Overall a very appealing exemplar of this large-format opulent work.
