Description from the seller
Origin: Angola
Tribe name: Chokwe
Material: Wood
Dimension: 35 cm
Shipping method: Colissimo within 24-48h, please open.
This statuette is a remarkable example of the art of the Chokwe (or Tshokwe) people, spread across Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia.
It depicts a male figure, probably a chief or a heroic ancestor, often associated with the mythical figure of Chibinda Ilunga. He is the foreign hunter prince who founded the Lunda-Chokwe dynasty, bringing with him a new political structure and advanced hunting techniques.
The Hairstyle (Mwana Nganga): The most striking element is the monumental headdress with broad lateral wings. It symbolizes high social rank and political power. The top is finely carved with geometric motifs reminiscent of fiber weaving.
The Face: It shows the classic Chokwe features: large almond-shaped eyes (sometimes described as “coffee bean” eyes), a broad nose, and a full mouth. The expression is both focused and serene.
The Posture and the Attributes:
The figure stands, legs slightly bent, giving an impression of vitality.
He holds staffs or scepters of authority in his hands, reinforcing his power.
The musculature is modestly suggested, emphasizing the quiet strength of the chief.
Wood: The sculpture is carved from dense wood.
Patina: It bears a dark, oily, deep patina resulting from the repeated application of vegetable oils and pigments over time. This glossy and sometimes crusty surface often bears witness to ritual use and the object's antiquity.
Among the Chokwe, such statuettes are not mere decorative objects. They serve as:
Memorial supports: to honor the lineage of chiefs.
Ritual objects: used to ensure village protection or hunting success.
Symbols of prestige: affirming the legitimacy of the ruling power by recalling the founding ancestors.
This is a piece that combines strong plastic force with fine detail (notably in the headdress), typical of the court style of the old Chokwe kingdoms.
