Description from the seller
Iver C. Weilbach & Co. — Antique Danish Brass Bearing Compass with Original Wooden Case & Mounting Hardware — Copenhagen
Engraved brass compass rose · Binnacle-top bearing compass · Est. 1755 · Complete set
DESCRIPTION
A magnificent antique Danish maritime bearing compass (pejlekompas) by the celebrated Copenhagen instrument maker Iver C. Weilbach & Co., Amaliegade 30, København — described on the box plate as "Sølver & Svarrer Instrumentmagere" (silver and lathe instrument makers).
Weilbach & Co. was one of Scandinavia's most respected and long-lived maritime instrument houses, established in 1755 — the founding year proudly engraved on the compass rose itself alongside a fleur-de-lis north marker and Viking ship motifs, reflecting the firm's deep roots in Danish naval and maritime tradition.
The compass features a large, finely engraved brass compass rose with 360-degree scale, cardinal and intercardinal points (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW), a central magnifying lens, and a pivoting brass alidade (sighting ruler) for taking bearings. The instrument was designed to be mounted on top of a binnacle (nathus) aboard a vessel. Two brass mounting flanges and a wooden centering block are included in the original dovetail-jointed wooden carrying case, which bears the original Weilbach brass maker's plate on the exterior.
The compass is in fine collector's condition with a beautiful aged patina on the brass. The needle is present and the rose moves freely. The wooden case shows honest age-related wear on the exterior but is structurally sound and complete.
A rare and historically significant piece of Danish maritime heritage.
Case is 21,5 x 21,5 x 21,5
