About
Eugene Robert Richee (1896–1972) was an influential American photographer of the classical Hollywood era, best known for his iconic studio portraits for Paramount Pictures. As the studio's chief portrait photographer, he broadly shaped the visual image of numerous film stars in the 1920s and 1930s.
Particularly famous are the photographs of Marlene Dietrich, which Richee staged with a lighting arrangement that was unusual for the time. His images are characterized by strong chiaroscuro, precisely placed highlights, and sculptural modeling of the face. This technique gave Dietrich's appearance a cool, mysterious elegance and decisively contributed to her status as a style icon.
