Description from the seller
Théophile Gautier – Works
Beautiful edition in 5 volumes bound in red half-morocco
Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1891–1898
Format: octavo, 16.4 × 10 cm
Bindery: Very fine antique binding in red half-morocco, spine with 5 raised bands and gilt compartments and titles, upper edge gilt, corners morocco, boards covered with a beautiful marbled paper. Bindings solid and harmonious.
Contents:
• Mademoiselle de Maupin – 2 volumes, 1891 (302 + 307 pages)
• Nouvelles – 1898 (590 pages)
• Romans et Contes – 1897 (499 pages)
• Le Roman de la Momie – 1893 (320 pages)
Condition:
Very good to excellent. The interiors are overall very fresh and clean. Some light foxing, mainly on endpapers and at the extremities of certain volumes. The gatherings are very tight and the books are difficult to open fully, as they are practically unread — an excellent guarantee of freshness and preservation for collectors. Bindings firm, no losses, no tears. Some minute natural dark spots on the morocco leather, inherent to the era’s hide.
The editions of Théophile Gautier’s works published by Alphonse Lemerre are highly prized by collectors for the paper quality, the careful typography, the elegant 12° format, and the often refined bindings in half-leather or morocco. They are distinguished by the characteristic elegance of this publisher’s catalogue.
This decorative set gathers several of Théophile Gautier’s principal prose works in a handsome uniform antique binding. A very fine collectible object for lovers of nineteenth-century French literature.
From a non-smoking household.
