DESCRIPTION:
A remarkable and complete handwritten manuscript from the Jewish community of Sanaa (Sana'a), Yemen, dating to approximately the 18th–19th century.
This extraordinary volume is a comprehensive compendium of practical Kabbalah, astrological magic, demonology, and healing formulas — known in Hebrew as Sefer Segulot ve-Refuot (ספר סגולות ורפואות, "Book of Remedies and Talismans"). The title page reads: קמיע טוב לכל דבר — "A Good Amulet Against All Things."
CONTENTS:
The manuscript spans 246 pages and covers:
• Birth amulets — protection for mothers and newborns against Lilith and harmful spirits
• Planetary astrology — tables of the seven classical planets, zodiac signs, and ruling angels
• Healing formulas — magical remedies for fever, eye disease, pain, and illness
• Demonology — named demons with binding formulas and illustrated figures
• Magical squares (Kamea) — numeric and letter-based amulet grids
• War magic — formulas for victory and personal protection
• Angel invocations — names and hierarchies of protective angels
• Alphabetic Kabbalistic permutations (Atbash, Albam systems)
• References to the ancient Sefer HaRazim (Book of Mysteries)
• Formulas against the evil eye (ayin hara)
LANGUAGES:
Written in three scripts/languages throughout:
- Hebrew (prayers, formulas, divine names)
- Judeo-Arabic (Arabic written in Hebrew characters — characteristic of Yemenite Jewish tradition)
- Aramaic (the oldest magical formulas)
ILLUSTRATIONS:
The manuscript contains numerous hand-drawn diagrams including: demon figures with binding inscriptions; full-page astrological tables; Kamea (magic square) diagrams; large protective amulet designs; circular talismans with angelic names; and unique Yemenite magical sigils.
PHYSICAL CONDITION:
- Paper: Aged and yellowed but stable throughout
- Ink: Bold, dark, and legible on all 246 pages
- Binding: Original leather, worn and need rebound
- Completeness: Appears complete
- Minor edge staining on some pages
SIGNIFICANCE:
Complete manuscripts of this type from the Sana'a Jewish community are extremely rare on the international market. The Yemenite Jewish tradition preserved unique forms of practical Kabbalah that differ significantly from European Jewish traditions, making these manuscripts of great scholarly and collecting interest. This item would be of interest to collectors of Judaica, academic institutions, museums with Jewish heritage collections, and scholars of Kabbalah, Jewish magic, and Yemenite Jewish history.
